Eid al-Fitr is the festival of breaking fast, which also marks the end of the Ramadan, the holy month of fasting. Ramadan is celebrated in the ninth month of Islamic calendar.

Eid al-Fitr is one of the most important Islamic celebrations.

Here are some facts that you must know about Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr:

  • Ramadan is celebrated at the time of month when the Quran was first disclosed to Muhammad
  • Ramadan's commemorate begin on the day after the new moon, which is the night with crescent
  • Laylat al-Qadr is considered as the holiest time of the year. This is celebrated as the day when the first revelation was sent down to Muhammad
  • In Arabic, Laylat al-Qadr means 'night of power'
  • Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan. It is day of the beginning of the new lunar month
  • Eid al-Fitr is celebrated after the month of fasting which symbolises the return of devotees to the normal day
  • The religious practices which are performed during Ramadan are; Fasting, Suhur, Iftar, Charity and Recitation of Quran
  • On the day of Eid, devotees perform a prayer in different ways, which are followed in Sunni and Shia Islam.
Penalties on disregarding the rules of Ramadan:
  • In many Muslim countries, the failing to follow religious practices are prosecuted as it is considered a crime. In 2008, in Algeria, six people were imprisoned for four years
  • Once in Iran, a non-Muslim was commanded to have his lips burnt by a cigarette while five Muslims were given 70 stripes
  • In Kuwait, one has to pay a fine of 100 Kuwaiti dollars or a jail for one month or both
  • In U.A.E, disregarding Ramadan is considered as a minor offence. One is made to do around 150 hours of communal service
